The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) offers full financial protection on air holiday packages bought from tour operators. If an operator goes bankrupt, the CAA refunds holidaymakers and repatriates those stranded abroad. This is done through a scheme called ATOL operated by the CAA.
But this protection does not apply to all air holidays-money spent. DIY packages may well not be protected when an airline, hotel or car hire firm ceases to trade. if you are putting together your own DIY holiday be sure that you take out adequate insurance.

Don't allow your luggage to be tampered with by leaving it unattended in the airport terminal. |
Carry your purse or wallet in a fastened inside pocket - never in your back pocket! |
Divide your cash and credit cards so they can be carried in two different places. |
Carry your passport only when necessary. |
Credit and debit cards are much safer to carry than large amounts of cash and can be replaced. |
Consider using Travellers' Cheques when travelling abroad. Unlike cash, they can be replaced if they are lost or stolen. |
Choose a handbag that can be securely fastened. |
Be particularly vigilant when using ATM machines. |
Check out your Tourist Information Office for areas that are best to avoid or ask your Holiday Rep for advice. |
Hire a safety deposit box or use the hotel safe to keep money, passports, tickets and valuables in. |
Don't leave safety deposit box keys in your room. |
Always lock all doors when you go out and don't leave balcony doors or other windows open.
Money
Consider using travellers' cheques rather than cash or cards. They cannot be beaten for security but if you are heading off the beaten track, make sure you will be able to change them. Cheques can usually be stopped or replaced within 24 hours if they are lost or stolen, whereas credit cards can take much longer. But you must keep a separate note of serial numbers to take advantage of this security feature. When you buy cheques, read the accompanying security advice and make a note of any numbers you need to call in the event that you lose cheques or have them stolen. |
